Sports and the Curriculum
In St. Patrick’s NS, we aim to provide a broad and balanced physical education programme. We also aim to encourage pupil’s skills and talents in the area of sports while offering them opportunities to certain sports they may never access.
Specialist coaching is offered throughout the year as part of our in-school PE progamme including GAA, gymnastics and swimming. GAA and Gymnastics are offered free of charge.
Senior pupils (3rd – 6th) visit Baltinglass Adventure Centre in June for a variety of activities under the Outdoors & Adventure Activities Strand. These include orienteering, kayaking, rock climbing, archery & hiking.
On every Aoine Bheo and throughout Seachtain na Gaeilge we hold large Ceilís for our pupils to explore the traditional dances of our country. These dances are great fun for all.
Santry Sports
Every year our Senior pupils participate in the athletic track events in Santry Stadium. Lots of preparation takes place before the big day and once there, win or lose, we have great fun and excitement. We are always so proud of each of our super stars!
Cumann na mBunscol
Our Gaelic Football team is coached by Paul Campbell and Stephen Davis from the Stars of Erin. Every September they participate in the South Dublin Cumann na mBunscol league. Boys and girls are welcome to take part.
School Basketball League
Our SNA, Aoife Mc Nulty, organises our lunchtime basketball league for 3rd-6th class pupils. Great fun to be had by all!! Junior Infants – 2nd class also play basketball at lunchtime but as informal games rather than at league level.
Lunchtime soccer
Soccer matches take place daily in the yard for pupils from 2nd-6th class. Budding Wayne Rooneys and Thierry Henrys to be found!!
Sports Day
In the last month of the school year we hold a Sports Day in the local Stars of Erin field. Each class has a relay race and a novelty race. Medals are given out for First, Second and Third place in all races including the parents’ races and every child gets a medal for participation. This is a great family day out and is enjoyed by all. See all of the fun in our Sports Gallery below.
Cycling Proficiency Course
A Cycling Proficiency Course takes place every year for pupils of 6th class in Our Lady of the Wayside School. This course is given by Mrs. Jane Glanville and is run by the D.L.R.D. Council. This course consists of 6 lessons including a test and all are free of charge. As a Green School, we are delighted to encourage safe, green travel amongst our pupils.
Extra Curricular Classes
There are also after school sporting activities that parents may sign their children up for such as Playball and Irish Dancing. The Stars of Erin GAA club also train in our school hall in the evenings and weekends, with nursery and junior classes. Taikwondo takes place every Monday and Wednesday evening while adult keep fit classes also take place on a Wednesday evening at 8.15pm. All welcome.
We have a wide variety of sports stars amongst our pupils and we congratulate them all on their many achievements.
